I paint dystopian landscapes, set in the not so distant future

I am a Dutch painter, living and working in Naarden, the Netherlands. I have been painting on and off for more than 30 years. I have no formal art training, I do as I please. I work in oils and acrylic, but also often use other materials such as chalk, bitumen and natural elements, like grass, twigs, thatch, seeds, sand or seaweed.

I am a sociologist by training and before I became a full time artist I persued a succesful career in business. This has brought me around the world. I bring this experience along in my practice. It has shaped my vision on the world.

I paint dystopian, semi-abstract landscapes. I am far from comfortable with the course humanity is taking and express this discomfort in my work. I am acutely aware that we are only temporary spectators (and actors) here and that we occupy just a tiny speck. Because I foresee our presence might well be cut short or at least made very inconvenient, I paint landscapes as I imagine they could be in the not so distant future. These landscapes are often barren with no human life form present, as it once was and as it will be. As such my works are a reflection on nature’s enduring power and our own impermance.

Paintings are named, but also numbered by a year in the future (anno ….). That is the year where I place them.

Do get in contact if there is anything you like.
